Semi-annual (twice yearly) maintenance procedures to keep your pool equipment in great shape.

Cleaning your pool and maintaining good water chemistry is important, but you also need to have a good semi-annual maintenance regimen for your pool equipment. In this section we lay out a checklist for seasonal maintenance.

Here are the things that you should be doing on a semi-annual (2x/year) basis to keep your pool equipment working well and avoid untimely breakdowns:

    Clean the Filter

      If you have a DE or a Cartridge filter, it should be taken apart and cleaned every six months, per manufacturer recommendations. We have instructions for cleaning a DE filter here. We have instructions for cleaning a cartridge filter here.

    Lubricate the Backwash Valve

      If you have a DE or Sand filter, you have a backwash valve that should be lubricated and inspected every six months. We have instructions for backwash valve maintenance here.

    Clean and Test the Salt Cell

    Change the Mineral Cartridge (Nature2 or DuoClear)

    Reset the Timers

      Whether you have a simple pool timer or an electronic control system, it is good to change the pump run times and speeds (for a VS pump) during the spring and fall to correlate with the circulation needs of the pool.

      You will need to consult the manual for your control system for instructions on setting the run times.

    Check the Freeze Protection

      It is important to test the freeze protection to to make sure that the sensor is reading the temperature properly and also make sure that the the freeze sensitive components are assigned to freeze protection.

      See your the manual for your control system for instructions on assigning items to freeze protection.

    Test the Heater

      Turn the heater on and let it run for a couple minutes to make sure that it comes on and stays on. It is not good to find out that your heater is not working when you have friends in their swimsuits all ready to use the hot tub with you.

    Test the Lights and GFCI

      Turn the lights on to make sure they are working. Then go over and test the GFCI for the lights and make sure they go off when the GFCI snaps. Then reset the GFCI and make sure they come back on.

      It is a good idea to check the ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) every time you use the lights, just to make sure the protection is in place while you are in the pool.
