Are you planning a pool build in the near future? Or, maybe you’re in the process of purchasing a home with a pool. The right pool maintenance is critical, in addition to using the proper pool filtration system, which is vital to the health of your pool and those who swim in it. Of course, you don’t want your family swimming in less than sparkling pool water. A pool’s powerhouse is its filtration system, which captures dirt and grime to create a radiant, clean pool. It can be confusing to figure out the correct pool filter option to buy—either D.E. filters or cartridge filters.
Cartridge Filters – Easy to Maintain and Use
Cartridge filters are easy to set up and simple to use, so it’s no wonder they are a popular option among pool owners. These filters are often made of pleated mesh material, where dirt and debris is trapped in the cartridges. Cartridge filters trap particles down to about 10-15 microns (your mileage may vary), but the main advantage to cartridge filters is there is no backwashing required- which wastes water and chemicals.
Try to clean your cartridge filter every four to six months, or clean them when the filter pressure reaches 7-10 PDI over “clean” pressure to keep it in proper working order.
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filters – For the Cleanest Clean
Some of the cleanest, bluest pool water stems from using the Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filter system. A set of grids and D.E. powder (diatomaceous earth) traps dirt and debris, as tiny as three microns, like a magnet. This tiny size can be compared to a human hair, which is 75 microns in width.
The upside to DE filters is that it filters the smallest particles of all filter types, providing crystal clear water, especially at night.
The downside to DE is you must backwash them (we usually recommend monthly), losing water and chemicals. They are also MUCH more difficult to disassemble and reassemble- which you must do once per year to ensure the grids do not have tears or holes in them, and to deep clean the filter of unused DE.
